David Bailin, Citi Private Bank CIO vs. Scott Baret, Deloitte Partner + Vice Chairman
David Bailin is Managing Director, Chief Investment Officer for Citi Private Bank. In this capacity, David acts as a single focal point for Investment Management, Investment Research and Client Investment Practice. He ensures the best integration of our asset allocation, research and portfolio management teams and offers his perspectives on the markets.
David joined Citi in 2009 as the Global Head of Managed Investments and was promoted to Global Head of Investments in October of 2017. Since joining the Private Bank, he has attracted and retained a highly talented, diverse senior executive and investment management team. David designed the architecture of the global managed investments platform, including its Citi Investment Management unit, a leading global investment management organization, and the bank’s distinctive private equity, real estate, hedge fund and traditional investment teams. Additionally, David was responsible for operational due diligence, portfolio asset management, asset allocation modelling, and product innovation.
Citi Private Bank is known for its independent and objective advice and as a leader in global investment management. It has been recognized in the industry by: Financial Times’ The Banker and PWM Global Private Banking Awards 2018: Best Global Private Bank, Best Global Private Bank for Customer Service; Family Wealth Report Awards 2018: Best North American Private Bank, Best Alternative Asset Manager, Best Art & Private Collections, among others.
David regularly provides commentary on TV and in print on global investing, asset allocation, family office investment management and the investing trends of high net worth clients globally. He has been interviewed by CNBC, Bloomberg TV and Fox Business News and has been quoted in Barron’s, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and New York Times, among others.
Prior to joining Citi, David was Managing Director and Head of Alternative Investment Asset Management for Bank of America Global Wealth and Investment Management, where he was responsible for client alternative investments across private equity, real estate, venture capital and hedge funds. David has been a co founder of a hedge fund of funds, Martello Investment Management, and a senior executive at two leading hedge funds, John W. Henry and Company and Ellington Management Group. He began his alternative investments career in 1992 as Managing Director of Global Asset Management, now a division of Bank Julius Baer, in New York.
David holds a BA with honors from Amherst College and an MBA with honors from Harvard Business School. He is married with three daughters and lives in Connecticut.
Scott Baret is a vice chairman of Deloitte LLP and the former leader of Deloitte’s U.S. banking & capital markets practice, which provides a broad spectrum of services to each of the banks and capital market firms listed on the Fortune 500.
Baret is a senior partner supporting the overall strategic direction of the sector as well as its go-to-market strategies and resources. Banking and capital markets represents the largest sector by both revenue and headcount at Deloitte, with more than 6,500 client-focused professionals.
Scott has more than 29 years of experience working with Deloitte’s largest U.S. and international banking and capital markets clients, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Barclay’s, Credit Suisse, Charles Schwab Corporation, Credit Agricole and AIG. Most recently, Scott has led a number of global projects related to the current financial environment in the areas of conduct risk, business operations, regulation, risk management and governance.
These projects have focused on assessing, improving and transforming the way senior management, boards and the broader organization approach governance, regulation and risk management across the enterprise. This often includes evaluating the use of data from operations, finance, risk and compliance, as well as the related supporting processes, methodologies and controls.
Scott formerly led Deloitte Risk and Financial Advisory’s U.S. banking and capital practice, as well as its global financial services industry practice. He worked for a number of years in our Paris and Hong Kong offices.
A frequent commentator, Baret has contributed to Deloitte’s reports on board governance, structured products and a series on the new financial marketplace following the financial crisis. He has also contributed to whitepapers from the Group of Thirty as well as the Institute of International Finance, covering such topics as conduct risk, risk culture, risk management and governance.
Scott is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of New York, and a member of the AICPA, the Risk Management Association, and the Professional Risk Manager’s International Association.
Baret earned a bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and a MBA from Columbia Business School.
He is married and lives in New Jersey with his wife Maryann and their two boys, Maxwell and Alex.
