Facetime with Karen Karniol-Tambour, Bridgewater
Karen joined Bridgewater in 2006 and heads Investment Research. She oversees teams of investors developing systematic insights on global markets and economies and is a regular author of Bridgewater’s Daily Observations, with a focus on fixed income, monetary and fiscal policy, money and credit flows and portfolio construction. Karen received her AB from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs with a Certificate in Finance. She is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, an Atlantic Council Millennium Fellow, and serves on the Board of Seeds of Peace, a nonprofit cultivating young leaders to transform conflict in the Middle East and South Asia. Karen was included in Fortune’s 40 Under 40 most influential leaders in business.
Mr. Herenstein is a co-founder and co-Portfolio Manager of Monarch Alternative Capital LLC. He has spent over 30 years specializing in researching and investing in distressed companies on a global basis. Mr. Herenstein has served on the boards of Shoptikal LLC, Tuscany International Drilling, American Apparel, Linens ‘n Things Acquisition, Oneida Ltd, IAP Worldwide Services and Hostess Brands. Prior to founding Monarch in March 2002, Mr. Herenstein was a Director of Lazard Frères & Co. and served as co-Portfolio Manager of the Lazard Debt Recovery Funds. Mr. Herenstein joined Lazard in 1992 and became widely known for his work on large and complex restructurings. While at Lazard, Mr. Herenstein and his partner were recognized by Institutional Investor magazine as the #1 research team in distressed debt in 1998
Prior to joining Lazard, Mr. Herenstein specialized in distressed credit analysis at The Delaware Bay Co., Inc., an early specialist in the field of distressed debt investing. Prior to that, he worked at Brean, Murray, Foster Securities.
He began his career at Bear Stearns in 1986 as Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Herenstein currently serves on the Board of Trustees as well as the Finance and Investment Committees of Yeshiva University. He received a BS in Economics from Yeshiva University and an MBA from Columbia University.
