Private Equity Investment Dinner
Dave joined Cortec in 1995 as a Managing Director, was promoted to Partner in 2000 and Managing Partner in 2010. Prior to Cortec, Mr. Schnadig was Assistant to the Chairman of SunAmerica Inc. where he co-led merger and acquisition activities and managed a $350 million alternative asset investment portfolio. Prior to SunAmerica Inc., Dave was an investment banker at Lehman Brothers, Inc. and a management consultant at Cresap, McCormick & Paget. Mr. Schnadig earned a M.B.A. degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and holds a B.A. degree, with honors, from Trinity College where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
David Wassong has been the co-head of the Strategic Investments Group at Soros Fund Management LLC since 2005 and has been a Partner in the group since he joined Soros in 1998. He and his team currently manage a global portfolio of direct private equity investments and investments in third party private equity funds. David currently serves on the board of directors for TowerCo LLC; Helios Towers Africa; and Goff Real Estate Partners.
Prior to joining Soros Private Equity, Mr. Wassong was Vice President at Lauder Gaspar Ventures, LLC. David started his career in finance as an analzyst and then an associate in the investment banking group of Schroder Wertheim & Co., Inc.
David received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Josh Empson is a managing director of Providence Equity Partners, a global private equity firm focused
on technology, media and telecommunications with more than $50 billion in assets under management.
At Providence, Josh focuses on media, with particular emphasis on sports and entertainment. He is a
current director of NFL/PEP Ventures and of Providence’s new European football platform, as well as a
previous director of Learfield Sports and MLS Media. Prior to joining Providence in 2013, Mr. Empson
was a partner at NantCapital and previously a managing director at Forstmann Little & Co. where he led
several investments in media and sports, including the firm's investment in IMG Worldwide. Mr. Empson
graduated from Princeton University and lives in New York City with his wife and their two children.
Mr. Spiegel is co-president and a founding partner of Pine Brook. He is responsible for managing Pine Brook’s financial services investing activities. Mr. Spiegel is also a member of the Firm’s Management Committee and Investment Committee. He represents Pine Brook as a board director of Fair Square Financial Holdings LLC, Fidelis Insurance Holdings Ltd., Global Atlantic Financial Group and Syndicate Holding Corp. He is an independent director of Essent Group Ltd.
Mr. Spiegel has 28 years of private equity investment experience. Before co-founding Pine Brook, he was with the Cypress Group from its inception in 1994 until 2006, leading its financial services and healthcare investing activities. Before joining the Cypress Group, Mr. Spiegel worked in the Merchant Banking Group at Lehman Brothers. He has served on the boards of directors of 19 companies, including seven publicly traded corporations. Mr. Spiegel is currently a member of the advisory board of the University of Chicago Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the Private Equity Council.
Mr. Spiegel holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics, an M.A. in Economics from the University of Western Ontario and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.
Sam Katz began his career in 1986 as a Financial Analyst at Drexel Burnham Lambert. From 1988 to 1992, he was an Associate and Vice President at The Blackstone Group, where he worked on numerous private equity transactions, including the initial LBOs of several hotel franchise brands, which created the
predecessor to Cendant Corporation. From 1992 to 1995, Sam invested in private and public equity as Co-Chairman of Saber Capital, Inc. and Vice President of Dickstein Partners Inc. He joined Cendant in 1996 and through 2005 led the execution of numerous transactions as Cendant’s most senior corporate and strategic development executive. He also served on Cendant’s Investment Committee and held various operating and management roles, including CEO of Cendant Internet Group (2000), Chairman and CEO of Travelport Limited (2001-2005), Co-Chairman of Affinion Group, Inc. (2003-2005) and Chairman and CEO of Cendant’s Financial Services division (2003). After Cendant, he joined MacAndrews & Forbes Acquisition Holdings, Inc. (2006-2007) as CEO.
Sam serves as a member of the Boards of Directors of Water Cooler Group, LLC, BQ Resorts, LLC, Cloud5, LLC, Lift Brands, Inc., Global Employment Solutions, Inc., BigName Holdings LLC d/b/a Envelopes.com, Family Entertainment Group, LLC, University Furnishings, LLC, HomeRiver Group Holdings, LLC, Pyramid Management Holdings, LLC, Hylan Holdings LLC, Triangle Home Fashions Holdings, LLC, Whitestone Home Furnishings, LLC (d/b/a The Saatva Company) and Dwellworks Investors, LLC. He also serves as a member of each of TZP’s investment committees.
Sam received his B.A. magna cum laude in Economics from Columbia College in 1986. He is a director of PennantPark Investment Corporation and PennantPark Floating Rate Capital Ltd., and serves as a member of both the Executive Committee of YRF Darca and the Managing Board of Darca and of the Board of Advisors of Columbia University Medical Center.
