Jason Shuman is a General Partner at Primary, where he leads new investments across built world, fintech, and marketplaces. The Boston native and University of Miami alum has jumped between sides of the table over the last eight years but started his career as the Founder of a D2C footwear company.
Forbes featured him on the 30 Under 30 in Venture Capital list; Venture Capital Journal named him one of Venture Capital's 40 rising stars.
John Frankel is a technology investor. He is passionate about working with founders that are building the big businesses of tomorrow.
He founded ff Venture Capital in 2008 to work with founders who share this vision, which has since funded over 150 seed and early-stage companies that have in turn created thousands of jobs and impacted the lives of millions. While ff Venture Capital’s investments span a number of industries, John is currently fascinated by applied artificial intelligence, encompassing drones, robotics, and financial services technology.
Over the years, John has served on the boards of over sixty companies as well as the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, to help in further fostering the New York City ecosystem.
Prior to founding ffVC, John had a long career at Goldman Sachs in a variety of roles that involved technology development, business reengineering, and capital markets. He has had the unique opportunity to work closely with some of the world’s leading investors, and as a result has developed a keen understanding of emerging technologies and portfolio risk/return management.
After graduating from New College Oxford in 1982 with a Masters in Mathematics and Philosophy, John worked at Arthur Anderson and qualified as a Fellow Chartered Accountant. Today, John enjoys traveling and is blessed with a large and growing family.
Susan Lyne is co-founder and managing partner of BBG Ventures, an early-stage fund that backs women and diverse teams transforming the experience of consumers, workers and employers. Since 2014, BBGV’s 3 funds have invested in more than 75 companies including Zola, Spring Health, KiwiCo, Chief, Blueland, Canela Media, Real, Starface, Anthill, and Topline Pro. Before founding BBG Ventures, Susan held leadership positions at media, technology, and e-commerce companies of all sizes and stages, from startups to public companies. She spent almost a decade at Disney, rising to President of ABC Entertainment. She was CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia; CEO and then Chair of Gilt.com; and CEO of AOL’s Brand Group. Honors and awards include Forbes inaugural 50 OVER 50, Fast Company’s Most Influential Women in Tech, Ad Age Publishing Executive of the Year and the Matrix Award from NY Women in Communications.
Melissa Marks is Corporate & Securities Partner in Gunderson Dettmer’s New York office. Melissa represents technology companies in a variety of fields including consumer products and services, software and SaaS, artificial intelligence, healthtech, online media & social technologies, hardware, and climate tech & clean technologies, and also advises venture capital funds investing in those businesses. She is experienced in transactions at all stages of the innovation lifecycle, regularly advising entrepreneurs as they form businesses, counseling growing companies and investors through rounds of financing, structuring tender offers, M&A deals, public offerings and other late-stage transactions, and providing day-to-day guidance on corporate governance, employment, and intellectual property matters.
In addition to advising technology companies and investors as outside counsel, Melissa was formerly the General Counsel of Boxee, a streaming media hardware and software company, until it was acquired by Samsung Electronics. Having served as part of a start-up management team, she knows first-hand that having flexible, business-minded, incisive counsel is of critical importance to the success of high-growth businesses, and enjoys playing that role for her clients.
Melissa currently serves on Gunderson Dettmer’s Management Committee (Board of Directors), and is also a founding member of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee, committed to fostering diversity both within the firm as well as in the broader technology and venture capital community. She began her legal career as an associate at the New York office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, and was a pastry chef in her long-ago first career. She currently lives with her husband, two children, and rescue dog in a happily hectic Brooklyn home.
